Heart of Iron

The Nitty-Gritty Details

Title: Heart of Iron
Author: Ashley Poston
Publisher: Balzer + Bray, Feb. 2018
Blurb: Seventeen-year-old Ana is a scoundrel by nurture and an outlaw by nature. Found as a child drifting through space with a sentient android called D09, Ana was saved by a fearsome space captain and the grizzled crew she now calls family. But D09—one of the last remaining illegal Metals—has been glitching, and Ana will stop at nothing to find a way to fix him.

Ana’s desperate effort to save D09 leads her on a quest to steal the coordinates to a lost ship that could offer all the answers. But at the last moment, a spoiled Ironblood boy beats Ana to her prize. He has his own reasons for taking the coordinates, and he doesn’t care what he’ll sacrifice to keep them.

When everything goes wrong, she and the Ironblood end up as fugitives on the run. Now their entire kingdom is after them—and the coordinates—and not everyone wants them captured alive.

What they find in a lost corner of the universe will change all their lives—and unearth dangerous secrets. But when a darkness from Ana’s past returns, she must face an impossible choice: does she protect a kingdom that wants her dead or save the Metal boy she loves?

The Experience

Um, holy shit.

I literally finished Heart of Iron a couple of minutes ago. Swiveling my seat around to turn on my computer and start working on this review is the first time I’ve truly moved (aside from turning the pages and breathing, barely) in minutes. Since I reached Part V, actually, I’ve been frozen like a statue; couldn’t move, because I was too enraptured in the story. Couldn’t think of anything else except what was going on in the book I was holding, in the story that played inside my head so vividly, I’m actually kinda surprised to be sitting at work right now and not abroad the Dossier, invested in the lives of the characters who have taken my heart and refuse to let it go. I expected this book to be incredible, based on the premise, the promise and the hype. I’m so glad I wasn’t disappointed in any of that and all of it proved true.

But I never expected that ending.

Holy.

SHIT.

It was wonderful. That book was…fantastic. I’m actually struggling to put into words exactly what I’m feeling at the moment, because…wow. That was completely, totally and utterly not how I thought that ending was going to happen. It’s completely blown my mind, in all of the best ways. I think it’s going to take me a while to truly process it and just stop cussing a lot to try and wrap up how this book made me feel, but seriously.

Holy shit.

35181314Emotions aside, I adored this book. I was so excited for an Anastasia retelling set in space. I couldn’t think of a neater way to retell a story that I’ve loved so much, ever since I saw the animated film so many years ago and fell in love with the story of Anastasia. The threads of that story are present here. But they are expanded and evolved and heightened to include a plot with twists that you can’t barely wrap your head around and make you freeze stock-still so you make sure you surely read that right, because there is no way that just happened.

Oh no, there is a way and that did just happen.

Shit.

The characters were fantastic. The writing was stellar. I got way too invested in the romances (and, if you’ve read it, now you might know how my heart is feeling right now ((hint: it hurts))) and I absolutely loved everyone aboard the Dossier. I want to read stories about all of their adventures before this story and then I want to read books upon books about what happens after this. Because there has to be a book about what happens after this. Right? Right?!

*goes on quest through the interwebs to find out any information over book two, pointedly ignoring the fact that book one came out a few months ago, so you got a wait ahead of you*

If you enjoy science fiction, read this book. If you enjoy romance, read this book. If you enjoy badass heroines, read this book. If you enjoy wonderful banter and dialogue, read this book. If you enjoy fantastic relationships and heartwarming (or -wrenching) friendships, read this book. If you enjoy a wonderfully intricate world that you just want to learn more and more lore because it’s just so fascinating, read this book. If you enjoy awesome fight scenes, epic plot twists and gush-worthy kissing scenes, read this book.

Basically, if you want to read an incredible book that leaves you breathless in the literal sense, as your brain struggles to process exactly what just happened while also trying to figure out what is going to happen next, then seriously:

Read this book.
