SPFBO 4: The Finals

Hello, everyone!

This is a little late in posting (my apologies!), but now that the finals are upon us, I wanted to write a quick post on how The Alliterates and I are handling our reading and scoring of it.

Since we are two separate blogs working together, we’re each going to read all ten finalists and give our own ratings. We’ll average those two ratings together and then send those along to Mark. The average rating is the official rating. While our personal ratings will be attached to our reviews, it’s the rating that is listed on the official chart that will count towards the contest.

Also, we will try our best to write reviews for all ten finalists. I know I personally plan to write reviews for all nine listed below (having already posted for our finalist), posting them here at Thoughts Stained, and I believe The Alliterates is going to try as well, posting to her Goodreads. Of course, life might get in the way and prevent that, but we really are going to try!

I used this GIF because it’s a) Martin Freeman and b) because he’s reading. Please ignore the confused expression on his face, because hopefully this post isn’t actually confusing. I mostly just wanted to post Martin Freeman…because, yes please.

Because I’m a Type A planner to the maxcore, here is our reading schedule for the contest. I like it because it gives us plenty of time to read each finalist and has us slated to finish reading the books in the first week of May, finishing a few weeks early of the May 31st deadline, giving us some wiggle room when, yes, life does interfere with our best laid plans without missing deadline. Still, this is the general timeline we’re following (the order, btw, was completely and totally random):

January 1st-January 10th: The Gods of Men by Barbara Kloss
January 11th: POST REVIEW and SEND SCORES
January 14th-January 24th: Orconomics by Zachary Pike
January 25th: POST REVIEW and SEND SCORES
January 28th-Feb. 7th: Sowing by Angie Grigaliunas
Feb. 9th: POST REVIEW and SEND SCORES
Feb. 11th-Feb. 21st: We Ride the Storm by Devon Mason
Feb. 22nd: POST REVIEW AND SEND SCORES
Feb. 25th-March 7th: Symphony of the Wind by Steven McKinnon
March 8th: POST REVIEW AND SEND SCORES
March 11th-March 21st: The Anointed by Keith Ward
March 22nd: POST REVIEW AND SEND SCORES
March 25th–April 4th: Ruthless Magic by Megan Crewe
April 5th: POST REVIEW AND SEND SCORES
April 8th–April 18th: Sworn to the Night by Craig Schaefer
April 19th: POST REVIEW AND SEND SCORES
April 22nd-May 2nd: Aching God by Mike Shel
May 3rd: POST REVIEW AND SEND SCORES

We’re really excited to read all of the finalists. I highly recommend reading all of the books listed above (and, of course, our own chosen finalist, Out of Nowhere by Patrick LeClerc) as the contest continues throughout the next few months. There are a lot of talented books here and a lot of great stories deserving to be read (both from this finalist batch and everyone who entered, this year and past SPFBO; I know, my TBR list isn’t safe, either). So we’re hoping, dear readers, that you’ll give these books a shot and add your thoughts and reviews alongside us, too!

Speaking of reviews, I’m pretty sure our first one is slated to go live tomorrow…

Read on!
