I saw the other day that Hannie over at The Hannie Corner did a tag all about gaming and she opened up the tag to anyone who wanted to do it, too. Because we all know how much of a gamer I am, I couldn’t resist trying my hand at this, as well! Especially with how much I enjoyed her answers.
1. What is your all-time favorite video game?
But of course, we start off with a really freaking hard question. I’m not sure if I can narrow it down to just one favorite, honestly, because there are just too many games I love for too many different reasons. I mean, you got Skyrim, but then you also have Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises. But then you also have Fallout 4, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, Kingdom Hearts II, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, any and all LOTR adaptations, Borderlands and all the games I’m surely forgetting.
And you want me to pick just one?
2. What is your current favorite video game?
My current favorite is probably Borderlands 2 or Borderlands: The PreSequel. Ever since the third installment has been announced, my boyfriend and I have finally started playing through these (the first time for me, a repeat for him) and it’s been a serious blast. I have fallen in love with the art style and I love the loot-and-shooter game, because I’m definitely the explore-every-inch-and-pick-up-EVERYTHING type of player. I was also surprised how much I loved so many of the different characters, for various reasons (though my favorites are prolly Tiny Tina, ClapTrap and Handsome Jack).
3. What is your favorite video game genre?
RPGs, hands down. I play the occasional MMORPG, like Destiny, ESO and Fallout 76, but single-player RPGs are where my heart lies. Give me a customizable character, the biggest open-world map you can come with up, companions to go adventuring with, someone to fall in love with, a main plot to rip my heart out, enough side quests to last the rest of my life and choices which consequences build upon one another, and you’ll win me over.
4. How long have you been playing video games?
Gosh, it’s been a hot minute, for sure. I’d say since I was probably 12 or 13, because I remember playing on the PlayStation 2 with my little brother when he was growing up. I started playing as my main hobby once I graduated from college, however.
5. What’s the first game you ever played?
This one is a little hard to remember. I remember playing a dinosaur-type game on my Grandma’s computer as a kid, but have no idea what that is. I think I’d probably have to go with Kingdom Hearts or Baldur’s Gate.
6. What game have you clocked the most hours into?
Is anyone surprised that my answer is Skyrim?
Yeah, I didn’t think so.
7. What’s your longest gaming session?
Prolly 12-14 hours? It’s not unheard of me to get up in the morning on a Saturday, turn on my PS4 and then do nothing else but feed myself and shower before going to bed. Especially in the summers between semesters, that was a particular favorite. Now, I usually play in two to three hour spurts during the week and longer bouts during the weekends, if I can.
8. Who is your favorite game developer?
BioWare, hands down. Bethesda is a close second, but even with the recent hiccups of BioWare, they brought me Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I will forever love them for that.
9. Who is your favorite hero character from a game?
Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect trilogy. It was the first time I played a character who carried over into another game, with the choices I made following me. Plus, with how much she did and how high the stake were–not to mention that fucking ending–it’s hard for anyone to top Shepard, especially after Jennifer Hale’s incredible performance as her voice actor.
10. Who is your favorite villain?
Honestly, I gotta go with Handsome Jack here. I loved seeing him start off as not so bad and then fall into this intense villain who just gets worse and worse and worse. Pair in his sarcasm and the wonderful delivery of Dameon Clarke’s performance–and the way his humor reminded me of one of my best friend’s–and I dunno, I definitely was ready to defeat him, but I couldn’t help loving him, too.
11. Who is your most hated character of any game?
Yennefer from Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. She was just such a bitch and I hated how she treated Geralt. I know a lot of people love her, but nope. Not for me.
12. What gaming systems do you own?
PlayStation 4. My brother and I shared a PlayStation 3 growing up, but it was always “technically” his, and I could never afford to buy my own. Luckily, my parents were amazing and got me the PlayStation 4 for Christmas one year and it’s been awesome.
13. What was your first game system?
14. What’s your favorite gaming system and why?
I don’t think I really have one, since I only have the one, if that makes sense. But I’m definitely loyal to PlayStation. Though I’m sure I could get into PC gaming if I wanted to, I’ve been strictly a console girl and I prolly won’t change that decision. I barely have enough time to play games on top of reading, writing and working out. I can’t add another console and a slew of other games on top of it.
15. Do you prefer to play male characters or female characters?
FEMALE. I love to be able to connect with the character I’m playing with and I am much more able to connect with a woman than I am a man (though I did have a blast as Geralt from Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt). I love being able to customize her to look either like me (or usually what I wished I looked like, rather) and really connect with her and her journey.
16. Do you follow walkthroughs, or do you play through on your own?
I usually don’t check with a walkthrough unless I’m a) really struggling to beat a boss or b) trying to finish something minsicle for completionist reasons and I’m banging my head against the wall trying to complete it. But, first play through, I really want to play as much on my own as I can, because I want everything to be a surprise and a new experience.
17. Have you ever been to a gaming convention?
I haven’t, but I think it’d be rad.
18. What game are you most excited to come out in the future?
Dragon Age 4.
(Don’t at me, THIS HAS TO HAPPEN.)
(But also, I guess you could say Cyberpunk 2077 and the not-yet-announced Horizon: Zero Dawn 2.)
19. What’s your best memory of a video game?
Probably after beating Mass Effect 3. I was sitting in my tiny studio apartment during my stint at grad school one weekend and had no plans, so I just played Mass Effect 3 all weekend. I was curled up in a blanket and it was 2am by the time I finally beat it, and I just had tears streaming down my face as the credits rolled. The story was just so powerful and I have been searching for a game to connect with me like that ever since.
20. What’s your worst memory of a video game?
I’m not sure if I have a horrible memory playing a video game? I mean, the only times I can think of are the various technological mishaps, like getting a save erased, an update needing to happen that took up my entire time-window to play, not being able to sign in to an online game, etc. I love playing video games, but I hate how often the tech fails me.
21. Which video game character do you see yourself as, or if you had to be represented by a video game character, who would it be?
I’m not sure if there is any character I’ve played that I truly see myself as, but if I could pick someone who I had to become–or who I could become more like–it would definitely be Kassandra from Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. I absolutely LOVED her. I loved her strength, her sass, the way she valued family and was willing to show emotion, as well as go out of her way to help others while also never stopping to case her own goal. Plus, she’s gorgeou (I mean, look at her arms) and strong and who wouldn’t want to be like her, honestly?
