Hello there, lovelies!
Let’s start off with a story, shall we?
I was lucky enough to participate as a late-addition judge for SPFBO 4 last year, as many of you know. In doing so, I read 15 books out of our group’s 30 book “slush pile,” with the goal to pick one to push forward as a finalist. I had two months to do this, during the busiest time of the year, so time was tight and my expectations for a quality novel were high. However, there were quite a few novels that, while I ultimately passed on pushing them forward as a finalist into the contest, I’m still very curious about them and do want to read them in their entirety, at some point.
Fallen Empire by Keith McArdle is one of those books.
Here’s a little bit of what that book is about:
Assassin-for-hire Vyder Ironstone is on a mission for the King of Wendurlund. While the pay’s good, the odds are not, since the task requires him to travel deep into enemy territory. But first, there’s the little problem of his death to overcome, not to mention a malcontent travelling companion with no love for humanity and a deadly purpose of his own. Vyder had better find a way to deal with both, and quickly, because, controlled by an unseen power, hordes of giant spiders have attacked the capital. Facing vast numbers, Commander Tork of the King’s Own and his small troop of elite soldiers won’t be able to hold the walls for long. Vyder’s quest is vital: he must not fail, or the empire will fall.
I definitely plan to read it in it’s entirety, now that I won’t have to read it pressed for time as part of the contest. Because I’m curious about where the story is headed and I think this author has a lot of potential and promise. We’ve talked quite a bit throughout the contest and he’s a swell guy, so I love to try and support him, when I can.
So, when he asked if I could promote the release of the sequel, I was more than happy to do just that.
Friends, feast your eyes on Warload, the second novel in the Ironstone Saga, which comes out Monday, June 3rd!
I won’t give any details about what the book is actually about, because I don’t want to give any spoilers, for those who haven’t read the first book (and myself, who still needs to read it in it’s entirety). But that cover looks pretty dang awesome to me and definitely has my interest piqued even more in this series. I’m very confident in McArdle’s abilities as a writer and I can only imagine how much his craft has continued to improve with this next novel–and his first one, from what I’ve read, has some strong foundations to work off of.
Hopefully, after I survive the perils of moving and actually have access to all my books again (*sobs*), I’ll be able to read Fallen Empire and give it another chance! In the meantime, I hope you give the series a read and let me know what you think!!
