Oh goodness, friends. Do I have an embarrassing post to write and share today. As I shared last week, there is one project I really want to work on this year, reading wise. What I’m calling the “2023 Series Reading Project”. It’s inspired by Caitlin @ Realms of My Mind and her series, The Great Series Read Project. She was kind enough to give me permission to do my own version of this, because…well?
I have a lot of series I have started and not finished.

2023 Series Reading Project
So, this feels pretty self-explanatory. But, as I discussed a bit again on my reading challenges post last week, I got my “library” cataloged and in order. I’m the proud owner of almost 300 books! However, only about 60% of them I’ve read. And am embarrassing amount I’ve only read the first book and not yet continued on with the series.
(Why? Why am I like this!? *sobs*)
So, my goal this year, with my 2023 Series Reading project, is to make some progress on these series. I hope to be as organized as Caitlin and have a page to dedicate my progress to, but we’ll see. The first hurdle, however, is to actually outline what series I have. Then, what series I’ve actually started, but not finished. And finally, my priority series I want to focus on this year.
Also, because this got unwieldly fast, for books that I’ve read the first book in the series but the second isn’t out yet, I’m not including on this list. Nor am I including any series I’ve already completed fully. For now, anyway.
Let’s dive in!
Stats: Series Owned
Note: this doesn’t mean I own all the books in each series. These are just series I have at least one book on my shelves. (Hilariously, it’s not even always the first book. π)

Priority Series for 2023
I know there is no way on this earth I could catch up on all of these series. Especially since I am trying to make reading books I own a priority. Obviously, I don’t own all the books needed to complete every one to begin with. Plus, I apparently own an embarrassing amount of series. Not to mention imma have to embrace rereading, I must admit.
So, below, if I manage to finish (or catch up) on these series this year? It’ll make the 2023 Reading Series project a win for my first attempted year. (Though, let’s be honest: half of these and I’ll be golden.)

- The Shattered Kingdoms by Evie Manieri
- The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee
- The Burning Kingdoms by Tasha Suri
- Kingdom of Grit by Tyler Whitesides
- The Drowning Empire by Andrea Stewart
- Magic of the Lost by C.L. Clark

In Sum
Good gracious, friends. I need a take a nap after writing out this post. I have always been inspired by Caitlin’s endeavor. Yet I never realized how much work it would be.
And that was just cataloging and organizing all the books for the 2023 Series Reading project. That doesn’t even include actually reading them.
*laughs until she cries*
So, if you survived this long post, congrats and thank you! But, i’m curious. Have you read any of these series? Any you particularly love (or hate)? Do you have a chronic problem of starting book one and not continuing on, like I do, apparently? Let me know in the comments!

I am DYING reading this. You know I have this problem too (especially buying books in a series that aren’t even the first in the series, because I tell myself – “of course I’ll like it! I’ll get this one now just in case…”). I’m cheering you on! I actually own several (and have not read) several in your Priority list if you want to buddy read sometime!!
Hahaha, Olivia, I have a PROBLEM. π€£ Ooooh, I’m curious which ones you have. I’ve never been the best at buddy reading, but I’m curious!
(Also, I totally owe you a Zoom, because got sick, boo. Maybe early Feb?)
I donβt have an acute problem with finishing series as I was a series binger / completist for many year, but I have had a growing problem since I became a book blogger π
Lots of overlap in your choices for this year! I loved The Jasmine Throne and The Unbroken, so their sequels will feature in my reading this year to stay up to date (vaguely; The Oleander Sword has been on my shelf a while already) and I need to read The Bone Shard Emperor to see if Iβm continuing with The Drowning Empire as I was on the fence after Daughter (I might have to reread Daughter first). Iβd also like to finish Wayfarers this year. I tapped out of The Protectorate tho, as I didnβt get a lot out of Velocity Weapon (itβs fine, but it didnβt hook me and there was a whole POV that irritated me).
I think it’s definitely changed since I became a book blogger, because I know more about books coming out? So it’s less of binging through a series I discovered and more reading new books and then having to wait.
I think their sequels are definitely high on my list this year! Oh dang, I’m so sorry you didn’t enjoy Daughter as much (I absolutely loved that book so that series is one of my top this year). I also loved Velocity Weapon. *facepalm* But I hope you’re able to finish Wayfarers this year!
Woo, that is a lot of series! BUT just know you’re definitely not alone with all the unfinished series reads because I’m much the same. I haven’t even attempted to begin calling myself out for all the series that I need to finish! π There are some where I just need to finish the last book but because its been so long since I read the whole series, I’ll likely have to do a series re-read before finishing it. It’s like a cycle or something? π I’m hoping to start and finish Becky Chambers’ series this year and I’m planning to do a re-read of Jasmine Throne before picking up the next book next month! The Green Bone Saga is one of my all time favourite series’ and so I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up and finish it this year. You totally got this, Nicole! I believe in you! π
Right!? I was exhausted making that post. π I think I’m going to be doing a *lot* of rereading this year and just need to be okay with that!
I love Becky Chambers! And yes, Jasmine Throne!! And I really need to just get the courage to finish the Green Bone Saga. JADE CITY was so, so good.
I say it every year, I’m going to stop putting series down in the middle ‘cos invariably I then need a re-read of the first ones. I wish you far better luck with it than I’ve managed so far π
Right? Like, it is absolutely daunting the number of 1st books I’ve read and then just haven’t continued. Oh goodness.
These are so many series (many of which I’ve heard great things about)! Good luck with this project!
Thank you, I absolutely need it. π
