Finally, I’ve finished another trilogy by Megan O’Keefe! One of my main goals last year was to finally get caught up with The Protectorate series. Mostly because I wanted to read it before starting her new series, The Devouring Worlds, which already has two books out and the third coming out later this year. So, I reread Velocity Weapon and finally got to read Chaos Vector and Catalyst Gate for the first time!
Needless to say, I think Megan E. O’Keefe is one of the best sci-fi writers out there, if not one of the best writers. Period.
An ARC copy was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

The universe is under threat and an ancient alien intelligence threatens to bring humanity down unless Major Sanda Greeve and her crew can stop it in the final book of this explosive Philip K. Dick award nominated space opera.
The code has been cracked. The secrets of the Casimir gates have been revealed. But humanity still isn’t safe. The alien intelligence known as Rainier and her clones are still out there, hell-bent on its destruction. And only Sanda can stop them.
With the universe’s most powerful ship under her command and some of the most skilled hackers, fighters, and spies on her team, it will still take everything she has to find the key to taking down an immortal enemy with seemingly limitless bodies, resources, and power.
- Twists upon twists! I will never get over what a master of the plot twist that O’Keefe is. While I still think Velocity Weapon holds the greatest twist I never saw coming, all the books in this series are filled with them. And they always ramp up and leave me breathless.
- Character growth. I am just so proud of so many characters!! (And my heart breaks for many more.) I loved seeing Sanda and Tomas’ journeys come to a close.
- The ending. It was masterful and heartbreaking in equal measure. I would love a spin-off series that dives back into this world at some point, just to explore some of the elements introduced through some of these plot twists. (Being purposefully vague here to avoid spoilers, but the gates!! I need to know more!)
- That the series is over now. 😭
With Catalyst Gate, O’Keefe is cemented as one of my favorite authors, ever. (Not surprising, since I’ve read two completed trilogies from her now with a third planned for this year.) If you are a fan of sci-fi at an epic scale, with incredible politics, mind-blowing twists and characters you’ll become so invested in, you need to read O’Keefe’s work.
