My Anti-A.I. Stance

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a hot minute. (But, as we’ve seen, I’ve been writing reviews and nothing but reviews this year!) But, as discussions about A.I. and it’s uses are popping up everywhere, I wanted to make my stance clear, in my space. I am very, staunchly anti-A.I. in any creative endeavor, pursuit or support.

Here’s why.

Why I’m Anti-A.I.

To me, saying that I’m a writer feels like it should be obvious enough of why I’m anti-A.I. in creative fields. But, with the rise of books, stories, editing and artwork being churned out by A.I. withing the writing, blogging and publishing communities; apparently it’s not an obvious stance to be an artist and want to support other human artists.

Who would have fucking thought??

But, here’s the main reasons I’m so concretely anti-A.I.

It’s Theft

For me, A.I. in it’s current form is theft. It’s being fed by tech bros, corporations and CEOS who had nothing better to do with their time than make underpaid interns collect information from creators who did not give permission to feed their artificial intelligences. All it’s creating is worst copies of art that already exists and daring to call it by the same name, assign it the same value.

With the overwhelming amount of theft that goes into training A.I. right now, there is no ethical way to engage it in without hurting real artists. Hard stop.

Artists Are Already Struggling

We don’t really have to explain this one, do we? Artists are already paid shit. So many of us are freelance, without insurance, trying to scrape by to make ends meet. It’s already hard enough to market when algorithms keep chaining (by the same tech bros, let’s not forget), let alone have the time when so many of us are working so many jobs to stay afloat.

Anyone can be an artist. Everyone deserves the right to pursue those dreams. But opening up an A.I. platform, typing out a prompt and getting something spit out two seconds later; then returning around and selling your A.I. “assisted” or A.I. “guided” creation and labeling it art?

You’re a thief, a con and a bastard, to boot.

It’s Environmentally Disastrous

Did you know that just training A.I. can “produce about 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of around 300 round-trip flights between New York and San Francisco – nearly 5 times the lifetime emissions of the average car”? (source) We already have so many barriers to fighting climate change!! Why are we engaging in this practice when it’s making matters worse, not better environmentally? You can’t have A.I. just print out a new fucking planet for us to live on, can you?

When you pair its current disastrous environmental impact already with what’s projected plus the ethical ramifications, I can’t see why anyone would be supporting it right now. Not without a lot of change of how it’s handled, how it’s managed and what it’s purpose is.

It’s Impacting Both My Livelihood and Industries I Love

As it stands, in 2024, A.I. is prevalent in taking over and replacing artists. Being a freelancer editor, I have literally lost jobs because writers are doing their line edits with A.I. programs; programs who I know isn’t going to give the same quality, care and knowledge as myself or any of my editing colleagues. As such, I’m losing income, which is the direct cause of my debt skyrocketing, since my day job doesn’t pay enough to cover anything except the bare minimum (bills). As my disability continues to increase in cost to manage it, freelancing is how I stayed float. Past tense.

As a writer–who has been writing stories for over two decades–I worked hard to learn my craft. I can’t imagine giving my ideas to a machine and taking away the work I put in for a half-assed regurgitation without any heart or soul that make my stories worth reading. Was it hard to learn? Abso-fucking-lutely. But I would never give up what I’ve sacrificed to make it easier. This process is integral to making good art.

Let’s also talk about the arts I’m not creating in, but supporting. I love seeing new pieces from artists to decorate my home with. Video games are my favorite hobby, created by amazing people, artists and voice actors. Reading books by other amazing writers gives me joy nothing else can.

All of that is threatened now. Every single one of our livelihoods. All the work we’ve put in. Everything we’ve built. I now spend extra time and care ensuring that I am supporting human artists and creatives. It’s exhausting, but it’s important. It’s vital.

In Sum

I won’t lie and say that the current rise of A.I. hasn’t been fucking with my brain, y’all. It’s everywhere, popping up in every program I use, begging me to engage when I want nothing to do with it. Am I anti-A.I. in everything? Absolutely not. Give me A.I. that can remind me that my eggs are about to expire. Or A.I. that can remind me to stay organized when filing my taxes. What about A.I. that helps me find the best deals every time I make a purchase? How about A.I. that’s better at predicting severe weather and giving greater warnings and preparedness? A.I. that aids human researchers in curing cancer, eradicating diseases and gives us all less time working and more time living?

A.I., inherently, isn’t bad. But, what’s happening right now, with its attempting to erase and dominate the arts, is not anything I want to be a part of. Everything I create–every post, every book, every story–it’s all me. I support human artists, writers, bloggers, voice actors, video game designers, creatives.
