Welcome back to Top Ten Tuesday! Once hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, it is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It’s a weekly book feature where a topical list-prompt is posted and readers respond with their top ten for that prompt. Yours truly tends to go over ten, but hey, what can a passionate reader do?
This week’s topic is: Books From My Favorite Genre
I mean, it’s no surprise that fantasy is my all-time favorite genre. It’s the genre that truly and most passionately got me into reading. But since I listed a lot of my top fantasy novels from the past decade last week, I think I’m going to highlight some different elements and more specific gems amongst the fantasy genre, to help mix up the books you see on here a little bit more. 🙂
Favorite Self-Published Tale: The Gods of Men by Barbara Kloss and Sworn to the Night by Craig Schaefer. SPFBO brought both of these gems to my attention and I am just SO grateful that it did. Kloss is a wonderful human that I’m so lucky to count as a friend now and I am just so excited to read what happens next in book two (though you take your time, love <3). Schaefer’s novel blew me out of the fucking water and it’s only a depressing bank account that’s keeping me from buying the next two books in the trilogy immediately.
Favorite Urban Fantasy: Cal Leandros and Jim Butcher series. I really loved the Cal Leandros series (even though I still need to read one or two more), but it’s hard to usurp Harry Dresden’s place in my heart as one of my favorites, so I decided to list both, because this post is already breaking so many rules, so why not? Plus, I really think, if they are looking for a new series to fill the Supernatural hole after this final season airs, Cal Leandros is where fans need to go.
Favorite Couple: So, I wrote this one and I was like, “Oh, I totally know who I’m going to pick for this,” and now that I’m trying to wrap up this post so it can go live, I’m…drawing a blank? I love strong romances, though, so give me your recs for that, too.
Favorite New Release: I dunno why I even listed this, because this is just cruel. Prolly The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons and Seven Shades in Black by Sam Sykes, for me, honestly.
Favorite Animal: You have so many quality animal companions–to not so friendly companions–to choose from! Smaug from The Hobbit. Mouse from The Dresden Files. Reichis from The Spellslinger series. Honestly, I want more books with awesome animal companions, so give me your recs if you got them.
Favorite World: Middle-Earth. I mean, that’s not really a question, right?
She asks, even though she’s the one who came up with these categories on the fly.
Favorite All-Nighter: Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames. Talk about books where life got in the way, so you found anything–food, sleep, socialization and basic human interactions–you could sacrifice just so you could continue reading them. I don’t think there are many more anticipated reads I have higher than the third Band novel.
Favorite Series Binge: Tamora Pierce, goodness me. I’m pretty sure I had every book that she’s ever written checked out from my local library at one point and I just binged through them all, one after another. Her novel Alanna: The First Adventure was the novel that truly got me into reading fantasy–a genre that has, quite truly and literally, changed my life.
Favorite Cover Artist: Richard Anderson, hands down. I mean, look at the story Tor.com did about him and showcasing so much of his beautiful art? Honestly, I suck because I definitely judge a book by it’s cover and I automatically want to read a book when Anderson did the art for it. Just sayin’.
Favorite Publisher: ORBIT. I also added in this question as a cheater, because then I get to list so many amazing authors that I absolutely adore that Orbit has brought to my attention, like: Sesbastian de Castell, Rowenna Miller, Melissa Caruso, R.J. Barker, Nicholas Eames, Tyler Whitecastle, Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan, Alex White, Sam Sykes, Brian McClellan, Brent Weeks. PLUS, I am so excited to read books from John Gwynne, Evan Winter, Josiah Bancroft, Anna Smith Spark, Fonda Lee, Kacen Callender, Megan O’Keefe and SO MANY MORE, GAH.
So, there’s a little twist on this week’s Top Ten Tuesday post. Let me know what you think in the comments below and please, never hesitate to share your links, too, so I can pop by and check out your posts, too!
