Welcome back to Top Ten Tuesday! Once hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, it is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It’s a weekly book feature where a topical list-prompt is posted and readers respond with their top ten for that prompt. Yours truly tends to go over ten, but hey, what can a passionate reader do?
This week’s topic is: The Ten Most Recent Additions to My To-Read List
This week’s post didn’t take too much thinking on my part (Thanks, Goodreads), but my memory is also ridiculously poor, so I was actually excited to see what books ended up on this list! For the sake of mixing it up, I only listed one book per author:
The Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow: This one is on my radar because not only does the blurb sound interesting, but it’s also from Orbit, which honestly, I’ll read anything they publish, so I’m definitely curious about this one (though I’m not sure how I feel about that cover, tbh).
Jade City by Fonda Lee: Okay, so major confession time. You prolly know, if you read this post, that I’m a complete snob when it comes to cover art and even though this book sounded incredible, I just…wasn’t a fan of the cover? So it just got lost in the shuffle and I forgot all about it. But as the trilogy should end this year and I continue to hear nothing but incredible things, I gotta get on this bandwagon.
The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang: Ironically enough, I just hadn’t gotten around to reading this book yet, thanks to the hype (sometimes, hype has the opposite affect on me and I find myself not reading a book because I’m nervous it won’t live up to it?) but then I saw the cover for the second book and knew I couldn’t keep missing out on this.
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim: I discovered this book thanks to joining the Year of the Asian reading challenge (actually, over half the books on this list are on my radar thanks to that challenge, so I’m pretty stoked about this). It’s pitched with elements of Mulan because it has a young girl posing as a boy who is trying to sew three dresses and has to go on a quest to achieve that, because these dresses are impossible to make (from the sun, mood and stars). Honestly, this just sounds incredible and so unique, so I’m here for this.
Blood Heir by Amélie Wen Zhao: Dark Anastasia Retelling. Yes, yes and YES.
Stronger Than A Bronze Dragon by Mary Fan: I love dragons and that’s no secret. But now you’re bringing in mechanical dragons in a plot of forced marriage to help secure an allegiance and complicated motives as the plot thickens? Yeah I’m sold.
Child of the Hidden Seas by A.M. Dellamonica: I’m honestly not 100% sure how this book got on my radar, if another blogger reviewed it or I stumbled upon it by accident but I’m always down to read more books about pirates and then one just seems incredible (and the cover is gorgeous).
The Witches of St. Petersburg by Imogen Edwards-Jones: I think this is the most unlikely addition to my recent TBR list because of the way it happened; thanks to a Goodreads ad that pitched this book as “a must read for any fans of the Romanovs,” which I couldn’t not buy into. I am trash for Anastasia and any literature that involves her or her family. I don’t normally read a ton of historical fiction, but I’m willing to take a chance on this debut.
Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Petro: Female Phoenix riders. Don’t really need more than that, honestly.
The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig: This one has time traveling vibes akin to James A. Owen’s The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica series, so I’m here for this.
Definitely some really interesting (I hope) books on this list and a nice mix between older books and upcoming releases. Anyone read any of these books? Anyone wanting to read any of these? Let me know in the comments below! And please, share your TTT posts with me, as I love reading these (even if my TBR list never really survives it).
Read on!
You reminded me that I need to catch up with Jade City before the sequel comes out😁
Then my job here is done. *salutes*
Ooh! I hadn’t heard about that Year of the Asian challenge.
Ohhhhhhh, you should totally check it out!! It’s a really neat and low pressure Reading Challenge that I’m super stoked to participate in!
I’ll look into it! In 2017 I did a 12 book series on India and China (nonfiction), and have been nosing that area again.
Ooh, that sounds awesome! Nonfiction isn’t really my jam, but I hope you really enjoyed doing that series and find even more books to enjoy this year, whether you decide to join the challenge or no!
Just added both ‘Child of the Hidden Seas’ and ‘Stronger than a Bronze Dragon’ to my TBR mountain! Great list!
Oooh, yay! Yeah, my TBR list is never going to end, either. I hope we both enjoy them! 😀
I’ve had “The Girl from Everywhere” on my shelf for quite some time now. I’m thinking it’s one I either need to read or unhaul since I plan to become more proactive about what’s on my shelf in 2019. Hope you enjoy all of these!! 🙂
I feel you about trying to be more proactive regarding what is on my shelf! If you do decide to keep it, I hope you enjoy it–and thank you for the wishes, too!
Have you read Alix Harrow’s short story she published last year? It’s a portal fantasy like Ten Thousand Doors of January and is how I first came across her. I loved it.
I haven’t, actually! I’m shite at following (and finding) short stories, but with your recommendation, I may have to try it out.
Here ya go…

I feel the same way about Orbit, which is why I added The Thousand Doors of January to my list even though it’s a debut but it just sounds so interesting! And the cover is stunning!
I dunno how they do it, but I adore practically everything I’ve ever read from them. But the author also seems like a gem, according to her Twitter, so I’m excited about this one!
Ha ha, I’m an Orbit fan, so I”m with you on reading whatever they release! Wow, some of these look great — I need to check out The Thousand Doors of January, and I’ve been seeing Jade City everywhere and really do need to give it a try. Great list!
My TTT
Thank you so much, Lisa! I will support Orbit forever and, if you decide to review The Thousand Doors of January, I’d love to see what you think! I can’t wait to read your TTT list, too!
